Visual Arts Portfolio

The following gallery consists of pieces created between 2022-2026. Through the time of creation Lola moved between 3 different locations, carrying her love and identity with her. Art gave her a place to express all of these feelings and exhibit them to others in a way they will understand. Each piece carries its own unique story, sharing a portion of who Lola is and what she loves.

Lola!

IMG_1116 2.JPG

This is a self portrait I made using watercolors. It was my first time experimenting with this medium and allowed me to go beyond my usual acrylic paintings. Being able to explore watercolors through painting myself left me feeling less critical of the final product, because I didn’t have to meet any expectations, and taught me that it's ok for pieces to not turn out “perfect”. I titled the piece Lola! because this is what my mom often yells when I make this face during family photos.

This painting is a tribute to my friend, Kiara Elise Echaniz, who passed away from suicide at the age of fifteen. I created it as part of my IB MYP Personal Project, where we were challenged to develop a project centered on something we love. I chose to experiment with an impressionistic style—using bright colors and bold brushstrokes—because it felt true to who she was: vibrant, loving and full of joy. I titled the piece Tags, after one of our favorite songs, “Thrift Shop” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. It was also the first time I worked with colors beyond black and white. Creating this piece allowed me to honor Kiara in a way that reflects both her spirit and my own, bringing me the joy of her smile in a moment I needed it most.

Sunkissed

IMG_1602 2.JPG

This piece began as a flat acrylic-marker painting of the Wild Robot, but I grew bored with how underwhelming the background felt. I decided to cut the figure out and transform the background into a 3D scene instead. I also added small lights at the top to illuminate the deeper, shadowed areas. This piece allowed me to continue exploring a colorful, impressionistic style while working with a non-human subject. The inspiration for this artwork came from @unfantasmalol on Pinterest.

This is a small portrait I made of my dog, Daisy, where I continued experimenting with an impressionistic style. Until this point, I had only applied this style to human subjects, but using it on something different gave me confidence that I was truly beginning to understand how it works. Working on such a small canvas also challenged me to use smaller brushes and steadier, more intentional brushstrokes.
